The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary federal entity in the United States for collecting and analyzing data related to education in the U.S. and other nations. NCES is located within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences. The NCES fulfills a congressional mandate to collect, collate, analyze, and report complete statistics on the condition of U.S. education; conduct and publish reports; and review and report on education activities internationally. The NCES is one of four centers (along with the National Center for Education Research, the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance, and the National Center for Special Education Research) charged with carrying out the work of the Institute of Education Sciences.
Dataset: Amount by Line Item from the Public Elementary/Secondary School Finance DatabaseReports revenues by source and expenditures by function and object for public elementary/secondary school districts in the United States.
The finance data presented here are from the F-33 survey, a component of the Common Core of Data (CCD). The CCD is the primary NCES database on public elementary and secondary education in the United States. NCES and the Governments Division of the US Census Bureau collaborate to collect public education finance data. Revenues and expenditures are audited after the close of the fiscal year and are then submitted to NCES by each state education agency.
NOTE: NCES presents FIPS codes for the school facility. County and state statistics are calculated based on the given FIPS codes, and national numbers are created as a roll-up of the detailed numbers. Year noted represents the fiscal year. For example, 2012 data cover FY2012, which runs 2011-2012. The fiscal year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 for most states. NCES survey analysts do not edit F-33 data to conform to a uniform fiscal year. For more information, also see About US Elementary/Secondary Education at http://data-planet.libguides.com/ESES.
