The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary federal entity in the United States for collecting and analyzing data related to education in the U.S. and other nations. NCES is located within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences. The NCES fulfills a congressional mandate to collect, collate, analyze, and report complete statistics on the condition of U.S. education; conduct and publish reports; and review and report on education activities internationally. The NCES is one of four centers (along with the National Center for Education Research, the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance, and the National Center for Special Education Research) charged with carrying out the work of the Institute of Education Sciences.
Dataset: Bachelor's Degrees from the Completions - Postsecondary Education (2011 - Current) DatabaseReports counts of baccalaureate or equivalent degrees conferred, which normally requires at least 4 but not more than 5 years of full-time equivalent college-level work. Counts include all bachelor's degrees conferred in a 5-year cooperative (work-study) program. A cooperative plan provides for alternate class attendance and employment in business, industry, or government; thus, it allows students to combine actual work experience with their college studies. Also included are bachelor's degrees in which the normal 4 years of work are completed in 3 years.
The data reported here on number of degrees and other formal awards (certificates) conferred are from the Completions component of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics. All postsecondary institutions that participate in or are applicants for participation in any federal programs providing financial assistance to students are required to report data using the IPEDS. More than 7,500 institutions complete IPEDS surveys each year. These include research universities, state colleges and universities, private religious and liberal arts colleges, for-profit institutions, community and technical colleges, non-degree-granting institutions (e.g., beauty colleges), and others.
In Sage Data, national and state totals are calculated based on the FIPS codes provided in the IPEDS data files. The Completions datasets are labeled by end year of the reporting period. For example, 2019 data represent degrees conferred July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019. Beginning with the 2010-2011 period, institutions were required to report race and ethnicity based on 1997 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) guidelines, making the series discontinuous with prior releases. For more information on race and ethnicity definitions, please see https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/report-your-data/race-ethnicity-collecting-data-for-reporting-purposes. CIP codes/categories were introduced by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in 1980, with revisions occurring in 1985, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. Completions data beginning 2020 were based on the 2020 CIP codes, with prior years' data based on 2010 CIP codes. For more information on the crosswalk between the CIP code versions, see https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/crosswalk.aspx?y=56.
