The Energy Information Administration (EIA), created by Congress in 1977, is an independent statistical and analytical agency within the United States Department of Energy. Its mission is to provide policy-independent data, forecasts, and analyses to promote sound policy making, efficient markets, and public understanding regarding energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment.

Dataset: Renewable Energy from the Energy Totals Database

Presents monthly and annual estimates of renewable energy consumption and production by resource and fuel type. Renewable energy resources are naturally replenishing but flow-limited. They are virtually inexhaustible in duration but limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of time. They include biomass, hydro, geothermal, solar, wind, ocean thermal, wave action, and tidal action. Biodiesel and fuel ethanol are also included in this dataset.

The Total Energy dataset includes the statistics used as the basis of the Monthly Energy Review (MER) published by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). It provides current and historical statistics covering total US energy consumption, production, stocks, trade, and prices as well as overviews of energy sources such as petroleum, coal, natural gas, and others.

According to the EIA, each monthly update provides data for a new month, which are considered preliminary by EIA and will be revised with the next monthly release. The same applies for annual data, which is often based on monthly estimates and is likely to be revised later that year after final data are published from sources, according to source data revision policies and publication schedules. In addition, EIA may revise historical data when a major revision in a source publication is needed, when new data sources become available, or when estimation methodologies are improved. The EIA Total Energy Dataset available in Data Planet includes all data made available through the EIA Open Data initiative.
